8/2008
Wing Ding, Greenville, SC
by Millie Prince
My granddaughter, Jessica, and I got into Greenville late in the afternoon on
July 1, 2008 and met up with some friends from TN. We had traveled 528.35 miles
on the trike for approximately ten hours. It didn’t rain, but was overcast most
of the day so it didn’t get too hot and we had a comfortable ride.
On Wednesday, Opening Ceremonies started at 9:00 and we knew we wanted to be at
the International Couple of the Year Selection at 1:30 p.m. and that was one of
the reasons we came in a day early. We had a good size Florida contingency and I
think most of us managed to sit in one section. (I later learned that we had won
the plaque for largest District attending.) We cheered our Region A couple,
Gregg & Pat Harbison, from Mississippi and they did a great job. However, Region
D couple, Ken and Rita Moffitt, were selected as 2008-2009 International Couple
of the Year.
Also on Wednesday night was the Talent Show put on by GWRRA members from all
over the country. After that, Scooter Davis was providing music and fun for our
listening and dancing pleasure to celebrate Wing Ding*s 30th Anniversary.
Thursday was 50*s & 60*s Day and a lot of members were dressed in their time
appropriate finery for the contest. The Mascot Contest and the Krazy Hat Contest
were also held Thursday, as was the Light Parade.
Friday was also the day of the Grand Parade where we were attempting to break
the current motorbike parade record. Only two wheelers counted towards this and
we fell a little short. If we had been allowed to count trikes and sidecars, we
would have gone way over. Maybe next year?
Saturday was another day of rain and cloudy skies. I spent much of it attending
seminars, meeting up with old friends and making new ones. Sunday was the
closing ceremonies and many folks left before the closing because of the
distance they still had to travel to go back home, Jessica and I included.
